Unet has announced a deal with Volker-Wessels Telecom to acquire fibre-optic infrastructure in eight large cities. The deal, completed last October but announced just now, covers The Hague, Eindhoven, Enschede, Groningen, Nieuwegein, Rotterdam, Tilburg and Utrecht. No financial details were disclosed. In total Unet acquired 3,400km of fibre duct infrastructure.

Unet will supply the actual fibre and light the rings.

A supporter of open networks, Unet offers access to 70 data centres around the country and profiles itself an an alternative business fibre supplier, alongside rivals such as Eurofiber, KPN, Tele2, Ziggo and BT. Director Gert van der Weide told Telecompaper the company was somewhat less well known that its rivals, but it participates extensively in market tenders.

It previously was also active in FTTH, but due to the slow progress in residential fibre decided to focus completely on the broader opportunities in the business market. Van der Wiede said the company is interested in further infrastructure acquisitions, as operating on its own network offers the best margins.
